Before construction on the Jefferson Island Storage & Hub (JISH) cavern expansion can begin, it is necessary for local, state and federal agencies to approve the applications and permits necessary to build and complete the project. At the state level, the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is the lead agency. At the federal level, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) is the lead agency. JISH is also regulated at the federal level by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
The following approvals have been received for JISH:
- JISH received permits from the Louisiana DNR, Office of Conservation, to drill three salt-water injection wells, which will safely diffuse the brine that is removed as the new caverns are created, into a naturally occurring salt water aquifer.
- The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality has issued a Water Quality Certificate for the proposed expansion. This certificate affirms that the dredging operations will meet State of Louisiana water quality standards. JISH also received a permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers for the dredging activity in the lake.
- JISH has received approval from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and a conditional permit approval from the Vermilion Parish Police Jury to bore under La. Highway 89 to lay pipe from the new caverns to our operations facility.
- JISH has obtained a pipeline right-of-way grant from the Louisiana State Land Office.
In addition to these permits, JISH is currently awaiting approval from the Louisiana DNR, Office of Injection and Mining that will allow for the construction of the cavern wells.
