Louisiana Map and JISH Vicinity Scenic Lake Peigneur is located in Iberia Parish, near the community of Delcambre. Like the community itself, which straddles a parish line, Jefferson Island Storage & Hub (JISH) is located on the border of Iberia and Vermilion parishes.

Centered in the waters of Lake Peigneur sit two barely noticeable wellheads that contribute to the security of our nation’s energy needs. Nature has not only provided the area with a beautiful recreational lake for the enjoyment of fishermen and boaters, but it has also given the area a unique geological structure known as a salt dome. This solid salt dome structure allows for the safe storage of natural gas and other hydrocarbons in man-made caverns almost a mile below the Earth’s surface.

Dome Elevation In October 2004, AGL Resources, through Pivotal Energy Development, purchased JISH, which operates two salt dome storage caverns below Lake Peigneur, from American Electric Power. Located near the Henry Hub — the major intersection of pipelines in Vermilion Parish at which natural gas in the US is priced— the JISH facility is a valuable resource in the nation’s natural gas supply network as it helps mitigate peak demand and price instability in regional and national natural gas markets, helping to ensure affordable natural gas for heating homes and other uses throughout the year.

JISH consists of 16 miles of dual pipelines that connect the storage caverns with eight major pipelines. By providing storage and hub services through direct connection to the Henry Hub, via the Sabine Pipeline, JISH helps to provide natural gas supplies to meet the needs of customers in Louisiana, much of the Gulf Coast, Southeast and areas of the Midwest and Northeast. Louisiana-based customers of JISH include an intrastate pipeline, CrossTex (formerly Louisiana Intrastate Gas) and several distribution companies in Louisiana.
