Welcome to the new Jefferson Island Storage & Hub (JISH) community Web site. In our ongoing effort to keep our community informed about our current operations and expansion plans, this Web site has been created to provide open, honest and accurate information concerning our facility.
We at AGL Resources take pride in being active members of the communities in which we operate and serve. We will continue to be responsible corporate citizens within Iberia and Vermilion Parishes, as well as the State of Louisiana. We are good neighbors who will continue to contribute to the area economy and the health, safety and welfare of the community as a whole.
Thank you for visiting our Web site. Should you have any questions, please send an email.
Sincerely,
Brian K. Jones

AGL Resources retained the services of Dr. Brian Lock, an internationally recognized expert on the geology of South Louisiana in general and particularly salt dome structures like the one under Lake Peigneur, to review data, visit the site, study salt plug samples and draw on his vast expertise to report on issues raised regarding the integrity of the salt dome under the lake. A summary of the information prepared by Dr. Lock for AGL Resources and our Jefferson Island Storage & Hub (JISH) can be found here.

Centered in the waters of Lake Peigneur sit two barely noticeable wellheads that contribute to the security of our nation’s energy needs. Nature has not only provided the area with a beautiful recreational lake for the enjoyment of fishermen and boaters, but it has also given the area a unique geological structure known as a salt dome. This solid salt dome structure allows for the safe storage of natural gas and other hydrocarbons in man-made caverns almost a mile below the Earth’s surface.

AGL Resources plans to expand Jefferson Island Storage & Hub’s (JISH) current operations by adding two additional natural gas storage caverns in the solid impermeable salt structure under Lake Peigneur to the two caverns operating currently. Applications for permits for the expansion have been filed with, or granted by, a number of local, state and federal regulators. Learn More > |

Dubious claims should not stop much needed gas storage project
Dr. Brian Lock of the University of Cambridge is author of a book on the history and geology of South Louisiana salt mining and has consulted extensively on salt dome geology: Like everyone else, I am affected by the crippling rise in prices of fossil fuels. It's not just the cost of a tankful of gasoline that hurts; natural gas that many of us use for heating, hot water and cooking now costs double what it did just a few years ago. For that reason, I am glad to see any industry efforts to stabilize or reduce prices.
